Royal Ascot Day 1 2020

In very few meetings around the world would you find one of the best races of the whole week scheduled first up. Royal Ascot is different. The Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes is the first race at Royal Ascot Day 1, won in 2020 by Circus Maximus for Aidan O’Brien.

The Coventry Stakes comes next, a Group 2 but top level in reality. This is where the best early-season two-year-olds strut their stuff. Aidan O’Brien has a great record in this race, but look out for expert new juvenile trainer George Boughey.

The fastest turf horses on the plane are next up in the five-furlong King’s Stand Stakes. The 2020 renewal was taken by the brilliant Battaash who looks to repeat the feat.

On an amazing opening day, the fourth race is the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes. Effectively the 2000 Guineas of Ascot, this round mile race brings together the best one-mile colts in the business with John Gosden and Charlie Appleby two to look out for this year.

The Ascot Stakes and Copper Horse Stakes are two competitive handicaps which sandwich the Listed Wolferton Stakes to round off the day.
