Royal Ascot Day 2, 2021

Day 2 at Royal kicks off in great fashion with no less than three Group 2 contests. They are followed swiftly by the feature race, the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes. One of the hottest betting handicaps of the year, the Royal Hunt Cup, also takes place on Wednesday.

The day gets going with the five-furlong Queen Mary Stakes. Run for juvenile fillies, this is an ultra-fast event which was won in 2020 by American raider Campanelle, now favourite for the 2021 Commonwealth Cup later in the week.

From the fast and furious to the future star stayers. The Queen’s Vase is next, taken last time out by subsequent Irish Derby winner Santiago. Back in 2017, Stradivarius hit the headlines in this event and has now gone on to win four Goodwood Cups and is on track to achieve the same feat in the Gold Cup on Thursday.

The Duke of Cambridge Stakes is staged next, run over the mile for the older fillies and mares. On the schedule since 2004, this has proven to be a great race for improving four-year-olds.

The biggest event of the day is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes over 1¼ miles. Often featuring some of the world’s best middle-distance horses, the 2021 renewal looks top-notch. Having previously won at Haydock, Lord North came of age in this race in 2020. He returns to try again and may go off favourite even in the presence of Aidan O’Brien’s dual-Oaks winner Love.

Dark Vision was a well-backed winner of the Royal Hunt Cup last year. That is race 5 on the schedule this time, a massively competitive handicap featuring a full field of runners stretched right across the track over the straight mile.

The five-furlong Windsor Castle Stakes features some of the fastest juveniles around and should be another huge event. That precedes our last race, the Kensington Palace Stakes, a handicap over the round mile.
